Only two words.. STUPID GIRL
People generally don't like her because she was designed to be the antagonist, and was designed to unliked by the author. So, don't be too surprised if there are a lot of people who have a certain distaste for her.
Not really, I think she had a nasty attitude from the start. I think Sangwoo has a particular distaste for pretentious people, right from the start he found her annoying. He knew she had a bad attitude. We have been made aware of her 'bad attitude' by the author. Most people react to that and stick to the side of Bum and Sangwoo because we have been attached to those two main characters for almost a dozen of chapters before she even came to the picture. She was a dispensable character from the start; she was designed to be.
I honestly blame Sangwoo for everything Jieun said to Bum. He was well aware of her feelings towards him and what her attitude was like. I don't blame Jieun for being the way she's always been. People tell her she's pretty and she gets what she wants, what would motive her to change? Once in her life things aren't going her way and she's upset about it. Sangwoo brought Bum to met his friends because he wanted him to be bullied by them. Some people are able to look past Jieun's bad personality and aren't as blindly attached to our beloved MC's.
I had mixed feelings when we saw how men were thinking a pretty girl like her would not want to be bothered, or how her friend tried to steer her to an ordinary guy who liked her, but she was not interested. I felt like we were supposed to see her as judging by appearances alone and not liking ordinary people. This was reinforced by what she says about Bum.
But when I think more, I wonder why anyone should have to settle for someone who does not turn her or him on--I mean, it's not all physical, but when it comes to sex, people have a right to want what they want. So yes, guys bothering a pretty girl for sex when she is not into them would be annoying. And no, she has no reason to like someone who is not her type.
However, it also seems like she thinks looks are generally important, and not just for whom she wants to bed. This interpretation is more subtle, but I do think one reason she is so bothered by Bum is not jealousy because I doubt she thinks Sangwoo could possibly be into Bum. I think it's because she doesn't think Bum looks like someone who should be friends with Sangwoo, and she is judging Bum by looks alone and resents Bum for how he appears physically. I don't think it's about Sangwoo--I think she judges everyone on appearance.
I think it at least hints at her inner values. I've seen jocks who judge everyone based on sports, intellectuals who judge based on academics, and popular people who judge based on social status--it's about what we value. I mean, most people are not so simple and single minded that they only see one thing, but we do value some aspects most, and people do tend to pursue the things they value and value their own strengths. So, in a world where pretty matters most, the pretty girl should have the hot guy, and no creepy little friend would spoil the picture with his thin face and wobbly little legs.
I actually think she wasn't designed to be disliked. Maybe by a small amount, yes. But the times she was nervous was cute. And she looks really pretty. And the way she really likes Sangwoo is relateable for some readers (the innocent Sangwoo of course).
For me, she was a mainstream girl and also a victim, but no antagonist.
I think we were supposed to see that she is human and insecure--but that her faults are why she was picked--not that it makes it okay, but that Sangwoo chose her because she is considered pretty and is known to be into looks. The scene where he tells her she is cute even when she makes mistakes was heart wrenching because she obviously does care about making mistakes and she is nervous and vulnerable too. But Sangwoo knew that later those people would react to Bum like middle schoolers on a playground--especially her. But is isn't simple because all people have flaws. So I can see why some people like her or worry for her.
Oh I agree, I have seen people who like Jieun, because she had been a girl in love. Which is a very normal, relatable thing. However, I remain at my stand, I think the author had planned her to be a dispensible character. A means to create conflict and, based on chapter 19, progress in the development of the story. She's not an antagonist of the whole story, but to the two main characters. But that's only my opinion ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
I REALLY HOPE THAT THEY WILL CONFESS TO EACH OTHER AS SOO AS POSSIBLE!! AND DON'T LEFT IT HANGOVER!! (ʘдʘ╬)
