In the story or with the author?

With author I’m curious too

The author has been dealing with tough times financially and mentally.

People have been illegal translating her work and uploading it into sites. Some have even been selling their translations. She confronted some people who did it and they lashed out and attscked her with made her mental health worse. She threatened suicide.

Some people have been virtue signaling about using Lezhin instead as if they aren't hypocrites with all the other manga they're subscribed to. But those authors aren't threatening suicide or going off on social media so I guess it's okay to steal from them but not this author. Why be here if you care so much about reading things legally? But I digress.

The author basically went on a Twitter rant and insulted Spanish-speaking readers, claiming they aren't real fans if they read her work illegally. This manga isn't offically published in Spanish so in her mind, if they speak Spanish, they can't possibly be able to read another language to read it legally.

She basically told them they come from a "Land of Thieves" and called them "illegal aliens". Which got her suspended from Twitter.

Also author threatened to stop publishing if the illegal uploads don't stop.


In the time of Shakespeare people in the audience would go to plays and copy word for word what the actors said. Sometimes actors were only given their lines right before performance to preserve works from being stolen.

In the time of Mozart, people with trained ears would go to symphonies and transcribe the music as they heard it. They'd go see the orchestra multiple times to get all the parts correct.

In modern times, people pirate media and use pirating sites.

I'm not saying this as an appeal for sites like mangago but more to highlight an age old fight. Even I have had works stolen online. I used to write poems for fun and a friend encouraged me to post them online so I did. My page wasn't very popular on the site but I liked getting my thoughts out. One day out of boredom I started googling lines from my poems and I found one of my favourites on three different sites with three different people claiming to be the original author. One even changed the title and the verse order. I was outraged at first but also flattered because although I loved that poem it didn't even get much attention when I posted it. Of all my poems, I didn't think it would be the one to be stolen.

That's how life works. It sucks sometimes but you can't control anyone but yourself. When create something, if people like it it may get copied or stolen.

Personally, I think the author should take a break. Things are clearly stressful for her. I'm not mad with whatever she choses to do next. I just think she's misguided in how she's handling things. She has every right to be upset but her offing herself isn't going to change a force that existed before she was born. If she drops this story, people would just steal whatever she does next. Seeing how she's been acting, it might just be worse for her because trolls might go harder on her for the lulz.

I think the best thing to do for her is take a break. She should try talking to her peers and reaching out to more successful authors who have been working in the industry for longer, see of they have any advice to offer her on how to manage.

Lezhin should offer creators more (as I've heard their gice shit deals). They should also look at who os pirating and why. If they don't want their works translated into languages illegally then they should beat illegal translators to the punch and do it first. Spanish is in the top 5 most spoken language so ignoring Spanish-speakers is just ignoring a huge market.

“Virtue signaling” you say, more like most people here dont want to risk the entire site going down seeing how far the author is taking things, AND the fact that lezhin offers coins every week or whatever making it possible to read it even if it’s not uploaded here. Also just because you felt flattered doesn’t mean everyone will. Author is already extremely aware of their story’s worth, they don’t need illegal sites to confirm lol.

Yes, "virtue signalling' because it's ultimately hypocrisy. It's offering an empty solution while pretending to care about a problem that you are still contributing to.

The author is signed with Lezhin. Last I checked there is more than one Lezhin comic here. If there are going to be actions taken that can impact this site it's not going to be by the author, it's going to be by Lezhin. Where's the demand to take down ALL Lezhin comics? Get them off the back of mangago? Why champion this author but not others?

So you all log into Lezhin 3 times a week to get 3 coins to read 1 story but then comeback to read 20 other stories for free and you think you're saving the site?

Yeah, sure.

If you cared so much about doing the right thing you wouldn't be trying to preserve illegal sites. As many have said before, there are legal means and they are cheap. If anything, having this site around while you pay for the same product just cheapens the product you just paid for. You just squandered your money and by trying preserving pirating sites you're also squandering time.

It's mental gymnastics to make yourself feel better.

As for feeling flattered, ever heard that poem that goes "God grant me serenity to accept the things I can't change."? No one has to feel flattered, one can be angry if they like but the internet is full of illegal copies of every type of media. Stolen art is inevitable and figuring out how to cope with that fact as a creator is just as valuable as learning to sing or draw or write. The author has poor coping methods when it comes to this problem but there are successful mangakas so advice from them could help. If she wishes to work in this industry the shadow of piracy will follow her, always. If this site goes down more will appear.

Yes, it is virtue signalling because it's hypocrisy at its finest. It's providing an empty solution to make yourselves feel better while still contributing to the problem.

There are many Lezhin comics on this site but I don't see anyone else asking for the others to be removed. What about those artists? Aren't their works being devalued by piracy as well? Why champion this author and not the others? Don't they have struggles as well? Don't they deserve to make their rightful earnings?

If anything, Lezhin is the one who will be taking action against pirate sites as they have more money and reasources to persue legal actions and they own exclusivity rights. They are actually the ones you are stealing from the most.

As mentioned before, getting access legally is pretty easy and cheap so why preserve this site or any other? If you're paying for a product that's being stolen then doesn't that devalue your money? And if you're fighting to keep illegal sites up isn't that devaluing your time as well?

Every single book, song, picture, movie, tv show, etc is probably somewhere on the internet illegally if you know where to find it. It's a hazard of the trade. The artist doesn't have to be flatter and they can get mad but the artist should understand that as long as they work in the industry the shadow of piracy will follow, always. However, there are artists who manage to make a successful career so asking for advice from them could help the author better cope with her struggles.

Personally, I think if it's that stressful to her and she isn't enjoying her work because of the challenges she faces then taking a break or giving up isn't so bad. You only get one life and you probably shouldn't spend it battling the wind, especially of there are more meaningful things you could be doing.

I also think that no one who uses this site has the right to any moral high ground, whether they pay for stories, merchandise, whatever else or not. If you're here you are part of the problem so the Lezhin people should shut up or stay on Lezhin. If the site goes down it's not going to affect them.

But wait...it will because they are still stealing, just not from this artist. ╮(￣▽￣)╭
