I think it’s more that most countries have a history of downplaying the suffering of African-American slaves. It’s less the slavery and more the continued stereotype that African-American people claim to be oppressed while having it better than everyone else (eg: the welfare queen). Specifically in this manga the African-American coded mc may be in slavery but lives in luxury as the bottom. It’s just a lot of people being uncomfortable with this story due to their understanding of the western cultural cannon. The story has nice art and good characters, so it’s sad that it perpetuates racial stereotypes. I think it’s fine to have a discussion regarding the bad qualities of the media we like, we can acknowledge that Stevan king is a good horror writer while acknowledging he’s a racist bastard <3
