I think he slowly starts to get the hints of her life. Why would your mother who didn’t interact with you, always unhappy with you suddenly gets nice, happier with her friends. I don’t think it’s not common for a woman to have a happy life anyway. They are expected to have child right away, even she did care about it but having your happiness ruined by others ignorance and jealousy is so dramatic.
