Maybe they ARE the same people, but in other dimensions. Say, if MC was brought to this new world he could just have taken the place of his counterpart, think of it like entering the mirror dimension. That would also explain why the other guy he remembered doesn't act at all like he did in MC's original world, but that are just some theories
