Maybe it was meant to be a short story from the start in order to promote the novel? A lot of mangas do that. They also left out parts and changed things around that didn’t happen like in the novel. Like Glenn showing chika his wolf form and chika being scared, then it was decided that chika wanted to see Gail and Douglas’ animal forms. Not like in the manga where they just happily do it after the father-in-law did it first
