They will end up together, the king has three wives right. The king endured all the time being married while still being in love with Paulina. But things happened to those three wives (resulting to him being single at the time if i'm not mistaken). And Paulina was also having a hard time at the moment because of her fiance. She got drunk and frustrated, and if i'm not mistaken the king felt really bad and comfort her resulting to him actually confessing his feelings. They "accidentally" spend the night together (paulina was drunk and frustrated). And when Paulina realized that she's pregnant with the king's child. She decided to run away and planned to raise the baby on her own. The king didn't know about this tho. He didn't know why she ran away.
then what happened? Does this mean we don't get a happy ending? ╥﹏╥
They did end up together tho just that it's not that simple. I feel like both had suffer first with they're own problems. I would say the ending is satisfactory for the novel. I HOPE THE MAHWA IS A LOT BETTER THO BECAUSE IT HAS POTENTIAL since from the beginning it's not as dark as the novel.
