Concubines are for sexual pleasures only and some concubines aren't even royals so I don't think the emperor would have a child with someone who isn't of noble blood cause they would be considered illegitimate and would have no right to the thrown. Plus from other stories I read when the emperor likes the female lead he doesn't sleep with others kinda like hernry from "Remarried Empress" and as we can see from this story, trashta baby has no right to the thrown even tho sovieshu is gonna make her empress so the baby can ascend the thrown but the baby will not be easily accepted by society
They didn't exist soley for pleasure, but pleasure was part of it. They were also there to produce additional heirs to the throne along with general royalty. Depending on the dynasty the concubines status would be different, during the qing dynasty most concubines were chosen from noble families
