Hello everyone,
I usually don't comment much, but since someone shared a screenshot with me about others misunderstanding the purpose of the footnote, let's clarify things.
First, when we made the announcement and included the footnote, we put a lot of thought into it. We did our research, we know what we're doing, and we're not ignorant. We encourage you to do the same.
Second, if you follow Wagimoko-sensei on Twitter, you'll probably understand the purpose of the footnote. We don't usually include footnotes in our project announcements about thanking the author unless it's necessary. So, why did we do it for Afterglow? It's your turn to follow the author and check out the announcement post Wagimoko-sensei made. You are not the only ones commenting in English.
Third, the footnote's purpose is not to expose us or the website where we upload our works. If you're smart, you’ll know that simply thanking the author for their hard work is enough. Did we ask you to say, "Guys, thank the author for their hard work and tell them you read it in English on an illegal website"? No. The purpose of thanking the author in English is to show the potential demand for an English serialization, indicating that many foreigners are waiting for an official English translation.
Many English readers have been commenting on the author's posts, thanking them, and expressing their desire for the work to be serialized. The footnote aims to show the author appreciation and highlight the interest in an official English translation. If you don't want to participate, that's your choice. We're not forcing you.
If you want to praise the author, we hope you'll include something like, "We can't wait for it to be serialized!" This could encourage the author to pursue an English serialization. Even if most of you can't buy their works, this helps them.
Again, including the footnote doesn't mean we want the author to acknowledge illegal sites or us (unless you expose us). The purpose is to praise the author and let them know that many foreigners are eagerly waiting for an official English translation. Be smart and know what to do. Just thank them as we suggested, without mentioning us or the illegal sites.
I apologize for not clarifying this well enough in the announcement. I thought most of you would understand the footnote, just like many other readers did.
That's all. We don't want to see any more unnecessary comments about the footnote. Please read this before commenting. Thank you for your support and understanding. We look forward to bringing you more translations!
Have a nice day!
Sincerely,
Fuho
And this is how scanlators get shutdown so thanks for clarifying. Let's hope that people just stop posting on social media and/or thanking authors that they read this on an illegal site
Anyway, thanks for all your hard work!
