He seems to care about the refugees and citizens of the defeated country. The knights have acknowledged his swordsmanship. He must have gotten close to the crown princess to get hold of important information. His face always seems to darken when people question his identity, when pereshati's words seem to hit the nail on the head (when they were trapped), or when he doubts her selfless kindness.

That's similar to what I was thinking, either he's a fallen prince or a royal knight from the defeated kingdom...I always thought he had something to do with the first wife the duke had like a brother of hers but maybe it's just because they cross paths after his kingdom was defeated and he escaped...just a theory since I also didn't read the novel
