Yeahh, he could have either communicated with her about how being together was putting her in danger and they could have made decisions together on how to handle it OR not gotten in a relationship with her in the first place. But he didn't do either and choose to hurt her while not letting her go. And that's how he got there. His real crime is indecision, selfishness, pride, and stupidity. If he's just 'protecting' her without telling her anything and not allowing her to make any decisions for their relationship he's still a very bad boyfriend. Maybe a smidge more redeemable now, but she deserves more than a guy who doesn't communicate, doesn't respect her decisions, and 'loves' her, but chooses to hurt her so he can still be with her.
