Actually, there's a pretty big hint abt kim rok soo (his original self before being cale) in chapter 44.
It is said that cale understands the wolf tribe children's pain because he went thru the same thing (when he was still kim rok soo) the wolf tribe children went thru, which was losing their support and families.
It's also mentioned near the beginning that when cale was kim rok soo that kinda hinted that he was alone, so that was probably because he lost the people around him..
