Since this is a flashback within the flashback, Yanek has JUST found out what Diesel is. They're not lovers. He captured a dog and was freaked out when it turned into a man, so yeah, he's being fair when he calls him a creature.
It's the opposite - Yanek first saw Diesel in a human form as he took him from the priest.
He obviously has rationality. He does not deserve to be treat as some kind of monster/pet. Even if he is a werewolf, he has a human part
