you're probably misinterpreting it. when andy said it was an absurd reason, he is delegitimizing and undermining chris' experience. he basically just said "oh you were raped, kidnapped, and almost died? big deal, you should have gotten over it faster." that would be a pretty terrible response in any language or culture.
