Neither. I prefer stories that move forward based on the inner motivations and evolution of the characters, not a bunch of random crap that life throws at them. I want their thoughts, feelings and senses. I want their failures and shame, their grief and outrage, their pleasures and persistence. Pay attention to what your instincts are telling you. If your gut is telling you "these aren't garden-variety assholes, but methed-up psychopaths" then don't go knocking on their door to complain.
