"He was the one who used, then betrayed my brother and me, cheated with other women during our engagement, lied about the nature of our relationship, condemned me to slavery and, if fate had not intervened in the form of your rescue, would've left my poor brother to die alone." See? Not difficult at all to tell people what sort of creep he is. Of course, the jerk didn't do a thing about Lady Victoria, so I guess it doesn't matter to him what you say ....
It's sort of weird to hear somebody say their "path of glory" was accomplished all on their own when the path is marriage ... to somebody else. I mean, yes, it was a big risk to approach that prince and make the offer. It took courage to move forward, intelligence to think the problem through and, then, willpower to act on it, but there is more than one person in a marriage.
But she didn't "get away on her own", that's the point. Putting in your best effort and doing it all by yourself are two different things. If there hadn't been a prince for her to marry, some wonderful person who was essentially ready to step up and help her, the story would've been different. Then it might have truly been a story about how she did it all by herself, although I would even be skeptical about that as somebody likely would've provided some sort of support in any bootstrapping effort, whether to provide employment, shelter, useful advice, comfort, or whatever. Otherwise, the story would be about how she was abandoned and either succumbed, alone, to the elements, or lived like a hermit all by her lonesome in some sort of survival set up. Anyway, this story is about how she is saved by a proposing marriage to a prince who provides her with an escape. Yes, she made the proposal, but he accepted it. Two and, in fact, several more people were involved, just not the ones who originally made her life miserable (but I will concede that if she hadn't taken any initiative or risk to act at all, nothing whatsoever would've improved.)
Okay, I have a better grasp of what you mean now ... or, perhaps, what the translation means. She seems to need to give herself a reassurance of personal strength since she's bothered by helpless feelings when other people touch her, even if they mean it kindly. It's still a very awkward thing to say since it goes against the very point of the alliances she has built.
Yes! Back to being straightforward.
