This kinda reminds me of beliefs in my country: In the Caribbean where I'm from some people believe when you die the good part of your soul goes up to heaven/the afterlife while the bad part(your pains, regrets, hatred) stay on earth/in the ground.
So when someone dies you place a shrub on their coffin, if the shrub faces down the 'bad' soul gets confused and stays in the ground.
But if it faces any other way the evil part of your spirit will be able to walk the earth and torment those it used to know
