Wdym? I believe the backstory perfectly explains his actions in the present. Not justifies because dude was a total piece of shit but explains why he does what he does. Simply, trauma manifests in many ways that affect our behaviors and actions. Unfortunately for ML, that trauma still tightly grips at his throat but it seems like now after backstory we'll see some sort of development, hopefully.
