He can still treat her like shit, husband has power over his wife at this time in China. He can frame her and demote her or send her away or frame her for sth that bad that he can divorce her
But her family is pretty reputable that if she complains or something happens to her they’ll go to the empress dowager. At least if she was a concubine, the wife would put her in her place and Gu isn’t forced to actually see her anything. Her family would have more reason to argue about her treatment when she the wife compared to if she was a concubine.
