Not the author making a story where magic exists meaning anything could happen story building wise but then also making country based on MENA countries and then letting the country so underdeveloped that they don't even have the fucking technology to make a damn boat
It irks me so much that when people say that they don't like the uke bc of his personality and what he's done others immediately just go "well its just how he is!! He was abused and mistreated so its normal for him to be mean to others too!!!" etc, like yeah I get that but its not an excuse for him to do it and that doesn't mean I can't like him for it. Like being a victim doesn't give you a free pass on being an asshole, I know this from first hand experience.
What he's went through is absolutely hell. Abuse, r*pe, attempt of suicide, etc. A crap personality is the least of out worries. You can't expect someone who's experienced something so disgusting to be a decent person. His personality makes sense, for what he's been through.
His personality makes a lot of sense considering this. I'm not saying it's ok for him to be an asshole to everyone, but his personality was probably made worse as a way to protect himself from these kinds of things. The worse of a person he is, the less people will want to be around him, and in turn those bad things wont happen again.
I don't blame him for not having a great personality and just because I don't like him doesn't mean I expect him to have a better personality either. But thank you for proving my point.
In reality, trauma doesn't give you a free pass to be an asshole, but saying someone has to be better because you have overcome your trauma enough to not be an ass is belittling what they went through. Yes, he's an ass but he clearly doesn't have coping strategies and he won't heal without them but as someone who has also experienced trauma we should all be understanding of the fact that we weren't always in a good place. No one is out there protecting Jaewon or giving him a safe space. He's got one guy who wants revenge on him using his body and another dick using his body. Those aren't exactly optimum conditions for self love and care. Yes, he's a horrible person but it's not like anyone in his world cares. Take that in for a moment. He's alone and traumatised and no one cares. As long as he's a warm hole then that's just fine and that's all anyone is interested in so why should he change?
So right you are, but never once have i read this story and thought "I really wish Jaewon would stop being such a meanie..." because of exactly what you just said! He's been through hell and back and he's about to go through another traumatic time of his life; he copes by being very very VERY prickly as a means to keep people at arms length or farther, and no one has bothered to try and understand him :(
He's an ass and he has reasons to be an ass, but trauma and lack of understanding from others and loneliness doesn't exactly entitle him to his behavior :(
Do I want him to become a better person? No, not really. This is who Jaewoon is and unless his personality changes on his own accords through him working on his "fixable" issues caused by trauma then there is no reason for a change.
Do I like Jaewon's character? No, not really. I don't find him annoying like most others do. Buuuuut I don't have to accept that he is an asshole just because of what he's been through in life, that's just not how it works. Hurting others because you're hurting and continue to get hurt should NEVER be acceptable.
Anyway, TL;RD my original point was that people can't say that they don't like Jaewon despite pointing out that they understand where he is coming from and why he is the way he is, since being an ass is never cool, without people going "BUT HIS TRAUMA!!!"
I think you're also right. Trauma doesn't make someone likeable. Nor should it. Some people tend to believe that because they have moved on that everyone else should and sometimes it's just not like that. If you went through something traumatic then you feel whatever type of way you do.
Jaewon's personality is a product of a lack of care or safety towards him. I don't think anyone should just have to like him because his story is so sad. An ass is an ass. It's just really sad and pitiable that he is the way he is because no one cares about him. I think the two are not mutually exclusive. Like, we can not think he's a nice person and still feel sad for him. I think what upsets people is the thought that there are people who know and understand what he's been through and still hate him, as in his trauma doesn't make any impact on why they don't like him. Because like I said, we can feel sad for him and still think he's a dick.
I think ultimately the discussion is about nuance and sometimes that just never happens on this hellsite.
