I really like the main character in this story. He’s responsible and smart. If you don’t put the effort, why should you get the credit? I get life happens, but you can contact the professor and left them know what’s going on. I’m pretty sure they’ll be flexible with someone dying in the family. It’s hard when you have to do an entire project that should be completed by 4 people.
