There’s no reason he can’t just straight up apologize to his wife. You just need to say “I’m sorry for doing [blank]. I know I caused you pain and made you feel like [blank] because of [blank]. I will work on becoming better for your sake by doing [blank]. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to improve as a partner.” And bam, you’re done with the apology. Then you work on being better. You don’t need to try to justify your actions with backstory. In fact, that would be a bullshit apology because it’s basically trying to excuse your behavior.
