Juding from one of the chapters which showed Sangwoo's memories, it showed that the father also mistreated his wife by making her sit on the floor to eat. What I think is that Sangwoo must have done those things to his mom because she took the father's side more than her child. Ofcourse he would have been fed up with her behaviour of always taking the father's side, so he must have tried to drown her. (Well that's only what I think must have happened)
