The setting of the manga makes their engagement reasonable even with the age gap but not acceptable in modern time. It's around world war 1 and considering Bunji high position in military, he must've been through a lot. I'm really looking forward to the continuation since there are a lot of conflicts that can arise during the setting of the story that can have a large impact on the development of their relationship.
