"the consort system isn't bad"??? how could you, a woman who has personally seen how much suffering it causes and how exploitative it is for other women say that?? maybe im overreating but taking in historical connotations aside i really can't handle how wattpad-y this story is anymore. The FL puts in 90% of the work and the ML/other men are basically background characters, yet of course we still have to uphold the system that keeps one man the most powerful while he rides on the achievements of the women he "owns"
This was literally my exact thought, like I understand that she is viewing it from how smoothly things are going now but how is it that she completely forgot not just what she went through but what all the other consorts went through as well?? Like one was literally trapped and was basically rotting alone with no one to talk to. The only reason the consorts had issues in the first place was because there is competition for the emperors affection to gain more power nd influence, clearly she doesn’t care as much now because she is the women with the most power right now but who’s to say how quickly that can change?

yesss like im not justifying the previous consorts actions, but we have to take into the socio-political system that forced this to be their only path. the FL's next step should be banishing this extremely abusive tradition, instead of upholding it simply bc she's the one in power now.
I think she’s talking about it from a view that it CAN work. It’s just that the consorts themselves choose to be problematic and terrible lmao. Examples are the two of the consorts who are normal and her friends. All the consorts have every opportunity to act the same, they just don’t because of their own greed to be the Queen. And people can say that’s just how they were raised/taught to be, sure, but that’s only a reason and not an excuse. Being taught to want to become Queen doesn’t equal terrorizing other women to get it. They chose not to use any other advantage they have such as intelligence, seduction, etc. to gain that seat, but to step on others they view below them for self satisfaction.
It has worked in other stories as well, where all the consorts had mutual understanding and were not so malicious towards each other. (Like Emperor And The Female Knight, Sabaku No Harem, Like A Wind On A Dry Branch, etc).
Also it isn’t as if the ML is powerless. It’s just that the story provides spotlight and focus on the FL alone. He wouldn’t have been getting this many consorts if he truly was not powerful. There’s a reason why so many women were sent to marry him for the benefits they can gain from him. Also the fact that FL did receive his manpower that he owned and didn’t do everything all by herself. I personally think it’s nice to have the focus shine on the FL most of all, since that rarely happens in most stories.

I get that the system can be something that works, but again the reasons I was referring to is not just the unjust acts of the first consort or even the other problematic consorts, the main issue here is that they are all women that are essentially being bought and sold. I also get that thinking this way is obviously a more modern thought process, but I just feel that these smart women should be able to understand that the system itself is inherently the problem.
Again as I stated in my first comment that one of the consorts was being withheld by one of the people from her OWN country. She was being used and abused even as she was no longer even in her country. The main character herself was literally also used and abused by her very own country and family, so she should be the person to understand where the issue lies the most.
So to tie things all up, your not wrong, the harem system can be something that works for the short term and has been something that has worked even in real life, but than again there is a reason it is no longer used across the world. Even as something in a historical book, it should be a system that is seen by most of these women, especially the mc, as a system that should no longer exist.
