I think she might have had the same issue as the current Hwa. Then the dad found out and got rid of the mother which is why the mom was never mentioned. But the mother already effected Hwa too much and Hwa became like her mother. Greedy and vain. Nevertheless, her dad never treated her too harshly but still distanced himself. So she did anything she wanted without being supervised.
