Being a huge fujoshi myself, i am obsessed with yaoi. so thought i'd do an article on it. why exactly are you guys obsessed with it? (●'◡'●)ノ i mean why specifically yaoi?

yaoi? cuz of the story, the plot, the feeling. something that I can't get from reading shoujo / josei / other genre.

    Fujobish February 28, 2017 12:54 pm

well its just so addicting... idk it gives me this wsarm feeliling that shoujo can never give me... i think its just bc i am a girl and like botzh guys and girls.... and like i like to see two differentz types of guys being all lovey dovey and my heart clensches and its super cute and i like to see a world where discrimination doesnt6 exist.. ofc there will be in some angsty manga but i like to see guys being happy for who they are enjoying their life etc... i also like to see thatin yaoi world they approach gay couples like straight ones like its not weird or anything its like very normal and nobody ever questions their sexuality. i repeat in some mangas it does but yah. i guess thats my reason. sorry for my bad english its not my first language and im in class typing real fast so i dont really have the time for grammatics XD XD hope this helped(づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ

Plot. There's just something special about the relationship between two guys that cannot be seen between male/female. Sorry, can't explain it well.

    MelodyLinheart February 28, 2017 1:18 pm

Well i dont know why i prefer gays over straight relationship when im straight myself, i had boyfriends and i get attracted to opposite sex but for some reason im not a fan of lesbians(yuri) i dont find them attractive. I like handsome guys too so i guess that counts? i mean its smexy hawt to fantasize over 2 handsome guys doing, you know "sticky" stuff xD. Im a kpop fan and i ship my bias with his band mate i even read fanfics of them lololol~

Originally, I started reading yaoi looking for something new and exciting to read. I was tired of the ditsy Mary-Sue's that dominated the shoujo genre. The BL storylines captivated me with their unique qualities. It was so refreshing to not have damsels-in-distress being saved by their bishounen princes. It was also nice to find male characters that weren't oozing masculinity all the time. Of course, over time, I learned about all the unfortunate tropes and pitfalls that many bl stories use. And while I dislike those clichéd stories, I currently read way more yaoi than shoujo. I find that I'm more likely to find a bl story with dynamic characters AND an actual plot besides the main couple's relationship than a shoujo story. Even when the story centers on the couple's relationship, there are often underlying social issues that are being addressed as the relationship grows. This is something that I find lacking in the shoujo genre. It simply doesn't fulfill my appetite anymore.

Agreed! There's just something about two men falling in love and rebelling against what society deems as "correct" and "proper".

Because straight love/sex makes me uncomfortable, maybe because the way it's usually portrayed maybe because I hate my own gender, Idk but that's def it.
But I don't think yaoi is good for us, it makes us hate our own gender too since women are usually poorly portrayed in it (either not or as an evil bitch).
I don't know much about other manga types but generally you can find a lot where women are being used or hurt. At least when it happens in yaoi you're like 'shrug, just a dude'.

It's give me heart attack and shoujo manga never give me

There's quite a few very good articles out there already that study this phenomenon in depth.
You could break it down into four general responses to why women read yaoi: story, aesthetics, security, and taboo.
Since most yaoi is written by women for women, it not surprising that it appeals to women. Most yaoi plots focuses on romance and drama, making the story as important as the sexual content, if not more so in some cases. Since many women often have to feel more than just physical arousal to feel satisfied, the romantic story lines are necessary.
Aesthetics refers to the obvious choice of including very few females in yaoi. There's more male forms to oggle for the readership. What's more they'd often idealized males forms. Fantasy forms, with hard muscles and soft lines and beautiful hair. Men too pretty to be real, which brings us to security.
As for security, there's two thoughts to this. One reason is because there's no other females in the relationship, the reader can feel secure on a subconscious level. It's just us, the voyeur, and the two fictitious men. How often have you read a hetero shoujo and despised the MC because they did this or that dumb thing? But change the gender to male, no changes in behavior or personality, and suddenly he just a precious little uke who can't get ahold of his feelings.
The second reason kinda transitions into the taboo category, but still focuses on security. Take the the yaoi manga trope of "rape = love". If such a trope was used in hetero manga, it'd be a major turn off for most women. Why? Because we subconsciously relate ourselves to the female MC and most women out there don't want to be raped. Imagine that. But change the MC to male and you get a different reaction. Because he's not female, the reader has an emotional buffer zone. The rape isn't happening to "her", so it's less scary and can be used as a device to move the story along. His that get raped rarely react as a woman would after such a event, further solidifying this disconnect. Some women even get excited by the idea of a male suppressing another male.
Which brings us to taboo. Besides the obvious taboo of two men having relations in a hetero normative world, there's the more subtle taboo of us, the readers, reading explicit material when women aren't "supposed" to be interested in such things. That illicit feeling many readers feel reading taboo material; in thier bedrooms, praying their parents or siblings don't find out; in school, where thier teacher or classmates might see; in public where anyone could notice and condemn them, it's as addictive as the compelling plots and physical satisfaction.

These are just some general overviews as to why most women who like yaoi, well, like it. There's probably a thousand subtle variations and subcategories.

Personally, I'm in it for the plot. In most shoujo, the feelings of the characters are too shallow and the plot isn't character driven. Not to say many yaoi aren't just as bad, but I seem to find more gems in yaoi than shoujo, and even josei. Maybe because yaoi is written for an older female audience?

I read yaoi (for quite a perverse reason)
It's simply lies in my mood. mainly I read yaoi because I want to see a guy showing more emotion or expressions in intercourse cause in the basic smut or shoujo/Josei with a boyxgirl couple the girl is usually the one getting super into it while the guy just blushes.
Though I have been able to find some where the guy is more involved but so few exist.
Of course sometimes I'm in the mood for boyxgirl or girlxgirl instead of yaoi and tip toe off to the nearest hentai site or read yuri.
Now there is a part of me of course like anyone one else that's in for the plot. (I'm not a complete perv XD)
