This may be a slightly less popular opinion but I will give my 2cents as a queer man. If we are talking yaoi specifically : There is always something fetishistic about smut. Shounen ai? Generally less sex focused, so there is a less of that in my experience.
And yeah you can argue that "its written by fujos who get off to gay porn and fetishize gay......
