(I posted this in reply to a comment - but hope it helps clear up some confusion).
The setting of this story is a world where nobody can lie. Our MC Saegye is what we call a 'Dare' a person who can lie, but it hurts when he does it. The existence of Dares isn't really widely known - so Saegye is keeping it a secret. We also find out that Saegye experiences abuse at home from his dad who constantly accuses him of lying about everything.
In comes Jinsol, who says a lot of enigmatic and mysterious things to Saegye. He also continuously hints that he knows about Dares and is super sweet and kind to Saegye, even going so far to say he loves him. But it's all a bit weird because even though Jinsol says that, Saegye walks in on him kissing a boy that Saegye used to like.
Saegye then thinks that Jinsol is also possibly a Dare, but when he checks (your status as a Truth or Dare is marked on your tongue with a letter) he's wrong. But it's all a bit sus and mysterious, because of Jinsol's strange actions vs words.
But Jinsol continuously says he loves Saegye, and since he appears to be a Truth Saegye connects with him and starts to develop feelings of love. He essentially thinks he's found that one person in the world who understands him as a Dare.
Fast forward to the now and the last couple chapters, it's been revealed that Jinsol is neither a Truth nor a Dare. But rather what we call a 'False', someone who can ONLY tell lies. Turns out he's able to swap his ability with someone through kissing them (this is how he "proved" he was a Truth to Saegye - by kissing that other boy and temporarily swapping their abilities).
In a shocker, Jinsol then betrays Saegye, and through a kiss, is able to swap their abilities around. Therefore Jinsol is now able to both tell the truth and lie and Saegye is now stuck with only being able to lie. Saegye is shocked and betrayed, thinking he had found someone who loved him.
After this Saegye then finds Jinsol's diary, which helps explain his backstory. We find out that Jinsol lives with his sister and their abusive father. On top of that, his sister is being stalked and harassed, with it getting worse as times goes on. But he can't do anything (E.g., go the police) because he's only able to lie. Also, their mum is out of the picture, so no help there. And their dad is awful to his sister.
He then develops this plan, where he finds a Dare (Saegye) to steal their ability to then essentially kill their father by burning down the house. He's then able to get away with it because he'll be able to tell lies, getting him and his sister to safety. He'll then also to deal with his sister's stalker. So as of now - he's pulled off this plan. While he admits to himself it sucks and he feels bad for Saegye, he'd do it all again if he had to.
The big kicker is he DOES have feelings for Saegye. Who is now himself trying to follow Jinsol and find out the real truth. Leading us to NOW, the present chapter.
Anyway, I missed a couple of things out but this is the main stuff. Hope it helped!
Also, keep in mind this is an overall summary. I've missed some plot points out - but they essentially just strengthen the overall themes of the story.
**recent chapter discussion**
In the scene in the cave, I think the baby dragon (sorry, mind blanked on characters names!) is seeing a vision of the prince in the past?
But when that prophecy is being said....is it that witch lady/priestess saying it or is it the prince who's declaring that? Or am I just off entirely haha, could someone explain I'm confused.
Like, is it the prince who's said that prophecy about Rahan and therefore it's implying he's got selfish intentions - alluding to what he said about wanting power more for his 'own gain'.
Up to chapter 25!! Just a little thought process...
Whilst I understand he was hurt in the past, he is jumping to some pretty WILD conclusions pretty fucking fast? It just seems really exhausting to base entirely made-up situations in his head without ever doubting himself or double-checking even the most basic facts (E.g., lets this dude he likes touch his penis NAKED but not ask if he's gay or even interested in him?) Also "this is why bi people are scary..." errrrr, you've slept with multiple people throughout this story, what a hurtful thing to say?
I have a couple of friends like that - the entire lack of reasonable questioning to what they perceive a situation is, and it's genuinely a hurtful trait to those around you. It's not conducive to healthy relationships at all, romantic or otherwise. And it sucks, cause he's nice.
"Your drawing is so good that an asteroid could crash in to me. TT TT An asteroid about 10 cm in diameter would burn into the atmosphere but I would be destroyed before that...it's hard to break a person's knee...but an earthquake"
If that doesn't perfectly represent chaotic vibe of the story idk what does haha
What a lovely manga - like it really really hurt my heart (in a good way!)
I really appreciate the ending as well, even though we all obviously want them to end up with their 'happily ever after' the story is truly really about the journey guests take through the Inn and stays consistent to that.
I also really liked the mysterious transient limbo nature of the Inn. I feel it was really reinforced by how once the guests would find what they were missing there was this almost immediate 'aha!' moment. Then they would move on....there wasn't really a sense of - I suppose - considering the Inn as somewhere they'd like to stay...it was just a stop in the journey to the beyond after their deaths.
The only thing that really stuck with me (other than the sad main pair!) was the little boy and the relationship he had with his mum and the nature of his death. I think perhaps that's something a little sad to ponder on.
Oh man, that's really poignant. I think I watched AI for the first time around the same age as Taehyun, I remember the way I cried. I'm not adopted - but I can see the parallels of not being the 'real' child. Kudos to the author for that, a small but really meaningful detail.
I also don't really (but do?) understand the actions of his aunt and mother - grief is an awful and terrible thing. But it seems very extreme to place the blame on a really young child.
It's a bit of a slippery slope "if you hadn't of ran away she wouldn't have got hit'. But if she'd looked before she crossed the road...or if the motorbike had slowed down. Or idk, Taehyun had gotten consoled rather than slapped for some pretty valid emotions?
