I loved this manga. it's so beautiful but so sad at the same time that they couldn't be together :'( I cried when I read it :p

I read Only The Flower Knows first so I understand that the young Motoharu Tsujimura in Capital of Flowers is the older Sensei in Only The Flower Knows, who meets his unrequited love Akira Hazumi's grandson Shouta Misaki when he comes to work in his lab.

What confused me is why Shouta's surname is Misaki rather than Hazumi (if he's Akira Hazumi's descendant)?

I may be missing something really obvious here so feel free to point it out if I am. Or maybe surnames work differently in Japan? Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

(sorry if this has been asked before!)

thanks! ^___^

I was thinking the same about the different surnames, but since its like that it gave me an idea that Akira Hizumi is the Father of Shouta Misaki's Mom thats why he didnt have the surname of Hizumi, or to say it simply hes the granpa on his moms side.

Ah that makes sense! I bet you're right. Thank you, it was confusing me since I read it! :p

There is also another explanation. It was said in the manga that his grandpa, Akira Hazumi, and his family were in a financially bad situation so his mother arranged a marriage for him for financial stability with a woman of higher stature. In Japan, such families that don't have a son or want their daughter to take over their family name, then they adopt their son-in-law so that they have a son to take on the name. So that might be what happened to Misaki's Grandpa.

Ah, I didn't know that happened in Japan. That would explain it too. Thank you both, now I can just enjoy (well I don't know about enjoy, it is kind of sad :p) the manga without the confusion hanging over me! :D
