Im Sharing this because people are fucking stupid and dont fathom why this site is really horrible. Im trying to move to mangadex just gotta transfer all my manga there cuz there are some really ungrateful people and if you agree you should leave this site to. (note they said to reblog this to share the word which i have done and now passing the word to you because I think this is important for people to know its really long but if you care at all please read it.) Tutorial no. 1:
To fully understand why it would be best to use other methods of consuming manga compared to aggregator sites [like mangago] there’s a few things I believe people need to know.
It is long, but please read it once you have time. More so if you truly care. Not because of me, not because of us (scanlators) but for your own education, so you’ll understand what you’re contributing to with your actions.

Short history and what are aggregator sites:
Aggregator site is any site that collects their choice of informations and gathers it in one place. But in manga/anime community this is abbreviated version of online manga reading site. Sites like this have a sole purpose to scrap manga from source pages (be it scanlators itself or other aggregator site) and reupload it to their own hosting site. With this activity it enables collection of numerous manga where users are not obliged to download but can read online right away. These sites developed because as humans we lean toward things that are easy. However hosting demands huge bandwidth and these sites use advertisements to cover hosting expenses.
While at the beginning these sites grew on scanlators home pages soon popped up pages that were managed by random individuals or now companies because they figured out one can ear money through these advertisements (as the earned money usually far exceeds the cost of running a page like that).
The difference between aggregator site and scanlators:
Earning money through aggregator site has became a problematic norm. Due to this many scanlators don’t want to be part of aggregator sites and have distanced themselves from the pages. Both are nowadays considered as 2 completely separate entities.
Scanlators are inherently illegal. But in most cases scanlators operate for free or they recive donations that cover purchasing cost (obviously there are exceptions, but the norm is not to earn money with scanlations, alos it goes against the “fans for fans” logic). This is so that scanlations do not get pressurised by copyright owners all the time. We’re huge problem for them, but they’d take a lot more serious actions if we were earning money. Scanlators are much easier to track down because in most cases we do not have funds to fully protect ourself online. Inherently we relay on our readers to help us with that. This is also part of “fans for fans” we’re all involved in.
Aggregator sites on the other hand do have money, money that you readers provide with your eye balls. Their companies tend to be registered in countries that have very loose laws or where international laws don’t really reach them (more often than not in China or some other near by Asian country; ironically MangaFox is based in USA). Therefore they have a lot less to worry about. At the same time they can use the excuse “we did not create this we are only hosting/reuploading this content”. So aggregator sites are feeding off of scanlators, earning money on behalf of their free work and at the same time put all the blame on scanlators.
Oblivions people:
Readers and primary visitors of online manga reading sites are oblivions to what I wrote above. It may be an exaggeration as I am simplifying things but google “problem with online manga reading sites/problem with manga aggregator sites” and you’ll get thousands of sites that explain this better than I do. However it is a fact that this obliviousness and laziness people are helping aggregator sites and hurting scanlator sites.
Example: a very well know Japanese defender of fan activities before Japanese law as in international waters (I can’t say their name but I’m sure some will recognize them) was not aware of the difference between aggregator sites and scanlators, thinking they are the same and therefore thought all of it had to be erased (this obliviousness is also present among publishers). Until last year when a person who got to meet them, but is also involved with scanlation community, explained to this author what the difference was and with what mindset most scanlators work under. It is at that point that the author realized aggregator sites = money hungry sites bad for community and scanlators= fans who actually want to spread the love for manga.
However readers are oblivious as well and only care of where they can get their fix. Many of these reader later build their own scanlator groups. As they grew up with aggregator sites they are absolutely fine and in fact upload themselves to aggregator sites. But this brings us to a different problem…
All kinds of scanlators:
Some scanlators want their stuff on aggregator sites. In fact they upload it themselves. This is because they grew up with these sites, or because they want to get famous as fast as possible, or because they want community feedback which nowadays is possible only at aggregator sites (I’ve tried many things, but people don’t get to talk much with me or other group members about the series we scanlated :/ wouldn’t you think we’re one of the bigger fans out there and that we’d love to talk about our projects?). And last but not least, they gave up on education readers. Number of people in one scanlation group and number of people reading a single project are vastly different. If I’m basing only by numbers I have at hand one of our most downloaded files had over 5000 downloads (and this does not include reads on aggregator sites or our on online reader (no, it’s not Canis)) - that’s not a number for a small group of friends to manage and properly educate.
So remember, there are all kinds of scanlators. There are those that want their stuff on aggregator sites, which is fine, but many of us are not supporting the system that aggregator sites stand for. In our (Dante) particular case we are that more on guard because of DMCA, and we’re far from the only one. Mind you, we could choose the reverse to purposely upload on aggregator sites because they don’t care about laws; however we do care about quality. Quality was one of the main points that fans always appreciated with our releases, and Canis simply deserves better than what aggregator sites offer (they use compression; google for more).
Powerlessness:
Unfortunately the current ecosystem is very disadvantageous for scanlators. If it wasn’t clear above there’s very little that we as scanlators can do. We can ignore these issues, writing rules we know readers will purposely ignore (cause “what can you do, huh?”) or wont read, and bang our heads in the wall when readers do come to us saying “I read this on “insert aggregator site of your choice here” and….”. We can make private communities for select members, or you need to go through a certain process to get access, or any other way that we can limit access and risk people calling us greedy because readers interpret this limitation in access that we don’t want people to read it (which is bullshit), or rude because we don’t want to stuff on aggregator site (people don’t know whole background; we exhaust ourself so we can release something and than we’re called rude to even enable you to read it?!). Or we can stop scanlating all together, simple as that (believe me there has been many prominent victims that fell at the hands of aggregator sites)
We all tried all kinds of methods but in the end little has changed if anything.

What can you do:
It may seem bleak but I wholly believe in educating people. Reporting is definitely something you could try. And maybe if people will make it a habit, one day aggregator sites will actually change. However do not expect to see a reaction. As said, aggregator sites don’t care much for what you want, they just want your eyeballs to make them money. And if you choose to continue using agregator sites that’s fine. As said some scanlators are OK with that. I would recommend using Mangadex though. They are one of rare sites I know of that cares to listen to scanlators and work with them (they’re also not earning money since the site is run by people closely involved with scanlation community and some of the moderators moved to Mandadex from now already dead Batoto < you can google more about both sites and what they stand/stood for as well).
>>>However please be aware of scanlators requests as much as possible. Read their credit pages. Most scanlators that don’t want their stuff on aggregator sites write that in their credit pages. If you spot one do next steps:
1. try to find out if they maybe allow another aggregator site (like MangaDex) and continue reading there. < this step is optional.
2. Find scanlators home page (it’s usually written in credit pages, but google is your friend too).
3. Copy their home page link (or maybe project page either under project or their manga reader if they host one too).
4. Go to comment section on aggregator site and tell them that this scanlator does not wish to have their work uploaded to aggregator sites, but readers can download or read it online on scanlators home page. Don’t forget to attach link you copied under step 3. (some sites use automatic link removal apps so you’ll have to break the link, or find another way to convey the message)
5. You can also add link to this post (or any other) which explains why aggregator might be problematic and why some groups don’t want their releases there. (optional)
6. Try not to read said project on the site itself if you see it updated (but please comment again regarding the scanlators request).
7. Use ad blocking add on. Different adds on apply for different browsers but most of them have them. If you really can’t drop aggregator sites and are fine with the quality you get there at least deprive those sites of the money they can get based of of your visit.

I’m not going to tell you to stop using those sites, but I’m asking you to be aware of the situation and educate others as well. We scanlators alone really can’t do that without your help
