Honest I feel like both Endeavor and Rei were really good parents but when Dabi died, they both cracked and fell into despair. Endeavour lashed out on his kids as an escape from the guilt of leading Dabi to his death. Shoto got the worst of it, since he was the 'wonder kid' who possessed both quirks. This is one of the reasons why I sympathize which Shoto so much, he was so young when Endeavor started lashing out on him so he only sees his father as an evil person.
He was snatched away from his mother's arms. Rei who lost her oldest son, could not cope well and blamed Endeavour for everything and seeing Shoto practice his quirks reminded her of Endeavor.
I see people talk shit about Shoto a lot but people don't realize that despite having both his parents, he never had their love, even his older siblings abandoned him, opting to live their own lives, and leaving Shoto to deal with Endeavor.
I do feel like the hate against Endeavor is a bit unfair at times. Trust me, I dislike him a lot. However, he is a genuinely good hero who lost his family due to his complex. What the Todoroki family needs is therapy. They are all mentally disturbed and they are in need of professional help.
I disagree, because in one scene in the anime, it shows todoroki being dragged by endeavor while touya and the other brother and sister play, so he has been always abusive with his children (sorry if my English is bad)
yeah that did happen, they were all there while todoroki was still abused. that’s how dabi knew he was abused like he said in this chapter
I also disagree on him not having Rei's love. There are some loving scenes of Shoto as a little child sitting with his mother or her holding him when he's upset. I think she loved him but eventually became overwhelmed from the abuse of her husband and probably from the death of her child.
Your comment did make me think about another element to why Rei went insane. I hadn't considered the mental impact of her son's death on her. Seeing another one of her children using the same fire which burned the other one alive must have been really wrenching.
