Basically Maxi works as a healer and has a lot of personal and practical growth while she is working with the injured. She eventually sneaks out with some friends and they disguise themselves as priestesses & are moved to another camp closer to the front lines / true war zone where they would have access to the info about their loved ones faster. eventually she finds Riftan on the front lines (or: he finds her). By now she has grown exponentially in magical ability. she fights in the battle alongside him and shows this insane power, but it backfires on her & she suffers a miscarriage. Her dad finds out and visits her while she's healing. He convinces her that Riftan has left her as he now hates her for losing their baby. Her dad convinces her / kidnaps her back to his place where she is, again, abused and tortured daily. Riftan eventually comes to find her, but accidentally finds out that she was actually abused growing up. He beats her dad within an inch of his life and then takes her outta there.
soo yea a loot of suffering in her future unfortunately

Well, since you put it in here, let me fix a bit.

Maxi suffers a miscarriage because she exhausted her power and then was buried in a landslide. Perfectly reasonable she would lose a baby she didn't know she had. She was in a coma and Riftan said not to tell her because it would devastate her. She unfortunately finds out in a situation surrounded by nobility as they judge her as damaged goods for being unable to keep the baby. Her father especially feels embarrassed by her presence and tries to get her out because he wants to set her half sister up in the royal family and this is making a mockery of him (*eye-roll*.)
Riftan thinks that sending her home is helping her cope with the situation and better for her because he failed to protect her (poor man.) Maxi thinks he is doing so because he also thinks she's worthless like the court and her father so she ends up going with him. However, he does come to see her before he marches off and she runs to see him, standing up to her father by doing so. This makes him angry, especially as she stutters through it. He beats the life out of her and tells her to strip so she's naked, nearly unconscious on the floor, and being whipped across the back. Riftan sees this as he hears her father basically to suck it up because there is a healing priest downstairs. Duke thinks the law of closed doors can protect him, standing up to Riftan as if he's the one out of line.
See, he was going to leave but her half sister (who comes across as emotionless but had to watch Maxi get beaten several times) invites him to and drugs the guards so he and the knights could come in. So technically, they are there illegally and by law, he shouldn't have opened the door no matter what he heard. Riftan takes the duke to another room nearby and beats him within an inch of his life, repeating his words about the healer being downstairs so not to worry. The knights stop him from committing murder. Ruth moves to go heal Maxi and Riftan is still raging but the knights handle it and the couple leaves to discuss things. Half sister tells them to remember what she did and makes no move to help her father nor escort them out.
Cue Maxi telling him she's been beaten since she was eight and had to read poems in front of her father one (maybe twice) a week. That's why the duke hated her stutter so much and why Maxi started off so soft-spoken and stuttered so hard at the beginning. She also explains she didn't want to tell him before because she didn't want him to think she was as worthless as she felt. Riftan cries through it and is very upset that he was just going to leave her there and not turn back to check. The knights instantly become protective "older brothers" to Maxi now, with her biggest critic being the first one back at the castle to vocally stand up for her against the duke's unfortunately lawful nonsense.
Because of this, the royal family has to punish Riftan. But Maxi takes the punishment and is sent to the magic tower. She's there for at least three years and makes a bunch of friends. But Riftan tells her he won't wait for her, his final protest in a long string of protests of not wanting her to go. He is lying, of course, and they miss each other terribly.
There are also chapters with Riftan's POV that flesh out why he put Maxi on a pedestal and why he cares so much but I don't know if the comic will ever cover that. I forgive a lot of his desire to monopolize her and squash her growing independence. He too is learning and growing throughout this process and its part of what makes this couple so good.

To answer spoiler question...

It's because the law he broke was being on the duke's grounds without permission. The law also protects him from whatever happens behind closed doors. So because Riftan came in uninvited (because her half sister didn't divulge her involvement) and disturbed his personal business, beating him within an inch of his life was the icing on the already crappy legal cake.
But to your point, that's what bothers me about the beginning of the story. The knights resented that Maxi never came to the estate after getting married. She had no idea she could leave. After this event, they 100% understand what happened.
Also (I don't remember if this was covered yet,) before her wedding night, the servants put it into her mind that he's a much larger man than her father and could basically kill her with one punch/he would hurt her worse so she had to do what he wanted or it would be worse if he got angry. Her father wasn't her only abuser, which contributed to her self-worth and lack of personal agency.
Why is Parvells expression so grave? Is it because now that Siens stigmata has been revealed he now has a bigger target in his back? Or that his bitch ass family will take advantage of this?
