Suicide Boy
I really used to enjoy this story. I thought it was a funny dark comedy, eventually turned wholesome slice of life, that would tackle the main issues of depression and self-harm. I was pretty fucking wrong, man. As I've progressed through the chapters, I've noticed things that began to irk me. It started when I realized the self-harm scenes were far too graphic, and weirdly sensual. I ignored it in hopes the artist was just kind of weird sometimes, and maybe things would get progressively better. That was until Hooni (Korean Age: 17, Worldwide Age: 16 - 15) and Sana (Korean Age: 15, Worldwide Age: 14 - 13) became the products of pedophilic sexualization. Both characters have been placed in non-age appropriate scenarios from the beginning. There are countless times where Hooni has been shown to be exploited, or potentially molested by older men. Sana, who again is canonically a middle schooler, and whose original design was representative of such, has now been drawn with more "feminine" features and suggestive poses. Comparing the older chapters to the newer ones, you can literally see the changes of hip size and shortening clothing. The worst part about this all is the plot and character relationships are well-written. Hooni is making remarkable improvements with his mental health, and his friendship with Soorim has brought me to tears at some points. The gross lewdness being thrown in for "ecchi" purposes ruins all of the amazing buildup and future for the story. I want to keep reading, but the disturbing aspects have made me hesitant to continue... We can't keep pretending this is ok.
