I'm so disgusted by so many of the answers to this question. I'm by no means an expert, or any kind of authority, but I'll offer my viewpoint. Hopefully it will be helpful. That is not a word. I will not accept that as a term that exists in any community, fandom, or any other type of group composed primarily of human beings. I think this may literally be the MOST offensive thing I have ever read. I just can't. Personally, I never would. My mom isn't terribly chill, but even if she was, I probably wouldn't tell her. Yaoi is more explicit than shounen ai, so talking to my mother about reading it would feel a little like discussing watching porn with her. I know it's not the same thing, but it's the closest thing I can think of to describe the uncomfortable...... reply
Only some of my friends know about my yaoi habit. I'd never DREAM of telling my family (mom, sister, etc.), but since I'm married, and don't live with them anymore, that's not a very big deal. My husband doesn't know I read yaoi, or if he does, he hasn't let on that he knows. I don't really have any intention of telling him. It does make me feel a ...... reply
