It's been a while since I've read it I didn't finish it so I'm glad this comment pop up. I forgot all about this story. From what I can remember the 1st wife wanted to go to magic school and to do so she had to leave since it would take her years to complete. && They were having financial problems so he married Annis for her dowry to pay debt. And to take care of the children && Since Annis is really smart she came up with ways to save the family from poverty. So because of Annis not only was he able to pay off debt she also by earned him lots of money. So all business things she was doing including keeping the finances in check pretty much running the house. He's an idiot who don't know anything & usually took the credit for Annis hard work earning him to be highly respected in the community. So to summarize the 1st wife wanted to go off temporarily and do her own thing and the husband is incompetent so he used Annis to fill his wife spot till she came back. It could be more but that's all I remember as of now
