The story really spoke to Yamato's personality as well. He may have said that he only incidentally saved Ai, but he definitely had some real affection for him. He wanted him to have a future and to be honestly cared for. He was worried about what would happen to Ai after he left. I think he could see that Nagato was the right one to hand the reigns of caring for Ai over to. He knew that Nagato didn't view Ai as a possession but as a human being.
Yamato is a good person inside and saved Ai's life in more ways than one. I'm looking forward to reading his story too.
