I might not understand completely but anyway after this she will plan to jump from a balcony to injure herself and I think bcs she thought that the duke won't want to marry a crippled bride. But when she jumps she will prepare big clothes to catch her at a height where falling from it she wouldn't get seriously injured and she prepared fake blood to cover her and a doctor to lie for her. After she fell the duke was the one who immediately ran to her and order peple to call a doctor. Then the doctor covered almost all of her body and face with bandage and I think the doctor mentioned that there would be scars to the duke. Ripley thought that the duke wouldn't want to marry her anymore but the duke said it was a relief that at least she was still alive bcs he really thought she'd die. At that time ripley realized that the duke sincerely like her.
