Hyoseop, an orphan with nowhere to go, was offered to be a guide in a guild. This was in America. He had no prior proper experience in guiding except for a few contact guiding here and there. That was until his guild was assigned to enter a SS-class dungeon. Yes, the same dungeon Andante/Owen was assigned to 10 years ago.

With Hyoseop’s inexperience, he failed to guide espers that needed help thereby some of them died right in front of his eyes. One of the espers he failed to save was this one guys brother. Consumed with rage and grief, he blamed it all on Hyoseop and initiated an imprint directly near his heart, binding Hyoseop to him for life (scar in his chest). I forgot but I remember the novel explaining that there is a significance in imprinting near the heart and how espers cannot live without guides bc without guides the esper will literally die. This happened when Hyoseop was 15. So I think until he was 18-19, Hyoseop was abused, manipulated, gaslighted, and used as a guiding machine. He was kept at home with no electronics or connection to the outside world.

It is important to note that the novel also explained that an esper is susceptible to being “obsessed” with their guide. An obsessed esper will do anything to keep their guide with them even if it means to kill. Needless to say, this guy was obsessed with Hyoseop. One day, this guy had an important mission and needed to be away for days so he asked a guild member (esper) to bring Hyoseop food. Why? Because this specific esper was known in the guild to have no interest in guides, so this guy chose him to bring food to Hyoseop. His instructions were to explicitly bring Hyoseop food only and to never talk to him. But that guild member never followed it and became friends with Hyoseop. Ultimately, he found out Hyoseop has been getting abused and tries to get Hyoseop out of there. But, the guy found out. As you may have guessed, this ended up with the two of them fighting to death. Hyoseop thought it was all his fault, and was devastated and traumatized. This led to him fleeing back to Korea to start anew. This case was left unsolved and hidden in the archives because it was a mystery why two espers died and a guide went missing. A connection with the missing guide and Hyoseop was never formed because in America, he went with the code name “Jin” and he was literally forbidden to go outside while in Korea, he is Jin Hyoseop, a guide for Onaip. ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶
