I think I explicitly just stated my frustration at the lack of any repercussions for ML, except for worrying. I think he could have handled things better

Well I think I understand what you mean. But, I think we also has a time when we made a mistake, regret our action and we chose to only show our redemption by supporting the person. In the novel, it is clearly ml regrets what he had done to ml, and even though for us reader there is lacking on his part he still support, protect and take care our dear mc after of all that.
