Essentially Shuyin has been playing games just for fun, then yeah puberty hit him and turned his motivation to play the game for the girl he loves which is no way abnormal. He is also tasked by his grandfather though.
So saying that "Lovey-dovey" motivation would ruin the series is dumb wrong.

It's not good to say that the author dropped this or that. Cuz this series has already been completed by the author (light novel tho).
