I don't know, the seme is insane. People that make comparisons between Sangwoo and him really didn't understand nothing. In KS, both of characters were insane, and tied up to each other by crazy dynamics, and their relationship could only be like that unless they went to a specialist (impossibile, right), meanwhile here...the seme is out of his mind but the uke KNOWS and UNDERSTANDS, even if he's under this sort of Stockholm Syndrome, so there's no comparison at all. This is the reason why I really found interesting Bum and Sangwoo's relationship on a psychological level, meanwhile these two...I mean it's just out of order. I'm interested on how it goes on, but not about their relationship at this point.
So true. I also don’t understand why people compare those relationships. What was interesting in KS was that the author didn’t make any excuses about how messed up Sangwoo and Bum were. Or how toxic and unhealthy this, I would say, codependent relationship was. We see some flashbacks but they are never used to excuse Sangwoo’s actions and the despicable person he’s become. Bum was a victim in the beginning but his crazy fit right with Sangwoo’s crazy and he embraced it. I wouldn’t say that Seungho is “insane” per se. He rather comes off as a self absorbed narcissist, who takes what and who he wants without care. Because that’s what he was raised to be like. Not really being a rapist, but a man who sees others beneath him because of his high status. Nakyum is a victim. He doesn’t reciprocate what Seungho pushes on him. He gives in under duress but, as you say, always remains aware of his situation and emotionally closed off. The problem I have is that Nakyum doesn’t seem to have any thoughts other than about the men in his life. What I find interesting is that the issue of social class always remains on the forefront of this story. You see it in how the servants are treated. How they treat the “relationship” by remaining quiet . How Seungho treats Nakyum and also how Nakyum treats those of higher status. I just wish it would also be reflected in what the characters think, not just what they do. And if they think about anything it’s about the “relationship” between them. I don’t see any scenes that suggest self reflection, yet. This story is interesting to me but I see some generic tropes creeping up. Like Seungho’s past. Nakyum hears parts of it, thinks about it, feels pity and emotionally softens. With this it comes off as an excuse for Seungho and not just a mere explanation to who he is now. I’m still interested in how a “relationship” like this would work between them but I’m sick of Nakyum being continually raped. I’m more interested in learning about their psychology, but I’m having my doubts that this will be explored. I hope it will but as of right now I yet again see a rehash of the “water on painting” situation. Seungho thinks it was Nakyum, Nakyum doesn’t defend himself and he gets punished. It’s just mere luck Seungho finds out the truth and seems to feel “bad” about it. It’s the same yet again but on a larger scale with him thinking Nakyum ran away, the latter remaining quiet. Nakyum being raped and treated even worse than before and Seungho finding out the truth accidentally yet again and feeling bad about his actions. I don’t know if that was an oversight by the author or if this will be used to make Seungho see the cycle of abuse he created here. I will remain open to it but what I’m still annoyed about is that Nakyum’s wounds, while being tortured by the assassin, mysteriously disappeared. Especially his choking wounds. Which makes me think that this was a purposeful plot hole to give us yet more rape scenes. So I don’t know what to expect here.
What an interesting comment!
It could be that Seungho is a self-absorbed narcissist, who takes what or who he wants without any care - just in the same way he throws it away!
And I definitely like the social class difference among them, it's one of the reasons why I like reading everything settled in another period of history. It could've been used much better than they do, though.
"I’m still interested in how a “relationship” like this would work between them but I’m sick of Nakyum being continually raped. I’m more interested in learning about their psychology, but I’m having my doubts that this will be explored".
Yeah, I really have to agree about this. I'm having so many doubts at this point that this will ever be explored, and I'm starting to think it won't be explored at all. All I see is seme raping the uke on repeat, not even being willing to understand him and it's frustating me.
I found this one of the most interesting comments, to be honest, usually people just comment "uke ruuuuun" or "seme dieeee" meanwhile you really formulated an interesting comment and I was glad to read your opinion. I honestly have no idea what to expect anymore from this ^^''.
Ah very interesting! If you put it like that it makes me more hopeful for the series. Now i really want to know how the author would play it, though frustratingly slow lol. And speaking of plot holes, is it just me forgetting important stuff or did that noona just came out of nowhere and suddenly a big deal in the series??
Thank you very much. I think the author is trying to push a “drug induced insanity” angle with Seungho to release him of some, if not most, accountability in regards to what he’s doing to Nakyum. Or how he’s treating his servants. It’s a way to make it palatable for readers if they end up together. I’m not keen on this at all and I see this as a rather lazy attempt to keep the story simplistic and smut filled. I’m not too sure if that’s what the author is angling for but the seeds to push it that way have been planted already. Personally I don’t even expect this “relationship” to end up being all healthy in a modern sense. So I try to keep the ideas of 21st century social equality at the door when I read historical fiction or in this case a webtoon. Seungho is a spoiled and rich man of noble standing. I don’t expect him to see Nakyum as an equal. I also don’t expect Nakyum, a low born, to openly stand up to this man and be successful. What I expect though is both of them questioning this “relationship”, the unequal power dynamics, consent issues and how they fit into it (or don’t). I expect some self reflection for both of them and thoughts about where they think this is going. Realistically, there wouldn’t be a chance for this relationship to survive at all. Seungho can act as disconnected to the reality of his position all he wants, but the fact remains that he’s not untouchable. We come to know that he’s from a family who barely avoided having fallen from grace, with that whole treason sub plot that was discussed for about one chapter. We also know that the rumor mill is brimming about his sexual lifestyle and the populace doesn’t seem amused. It wouldn’t surprise me if his social equals would later conspire against him. Some of it has to do with him being made a laughingstock for shacking up with a low born. Some of his part time lovers also feel insulted by this personally. And those are people who are his social equals (or close to). They could ruin him. So considerations for marriage to a powerful house seem almost inevitable for him. Nakyum doesn’t even have to think about those problems because he has other concerns. Like being an easily discarded toy for this man. He also doesn’t want to be in this “relationship”, even though I see evidence of him warming up to him (unfortunately). What I would like to see Nakyum employing his mind to formulate a plan to flee from this situation. I mean, he’s a young man who on his own was selling his lascivious drawings for profit. Where is this person? Because he disappeared. What I think is that Nakyum craves for affection and bestowed it on his learned sir who, at first glance, seemed to want the best for him. That’s why he stops drawing in the first place to his financial detriment. Which shows a major flaw in his personality. He looses himself to the person he loves and tries to do everything possible to please them, even to his own disadvantage. That is interesting as this might be an angle where the author will explain why he would fall for Seungho. But honestly, this would not be a direction I would be in favor of. I’d rather have Nakyum grow in inner strength and develop a sense of self, where he can recognize toxicity in others and remove himself from that situation. Be it physically, mentally or emotionally. That’s why I think they need to be separated and focus on themselves. I’m not sure what the author’s angle is with this story. Will we actually get
..lol sorry. Accidental premature post. Anyways... I wonder if the author will be addressing this in the future as this story is still rather ambiguous. Or will we see this being all to easily resolved with generic tropes. I have a bad feeling about the next chapters. I almost expect Seungho being suddenly so disgusted with himself that he throws Nakyum out with his noona. And Nakyum suddenly being all heartbroken about it. That would be all to easy as this should have been Nakyum’s moment to make the conscious choice to leave. If it’s actually Seungho who throws him out, the whole power dynamic won’t see a shift in Nakyum’s favor. And I think we need a shift like this. A shift where Seungho becomes vulnerable and Nakyum the resolute one who can say no to him without “punishment”. That would be the first real character development for both of them. So, I don’t expect a 100% equal relationship here, but given that I’m absolutely sure they will end up with each other, I’d like to at least see a balancing out of power here. Which might not happen. And seeing that they never talk about this “relationship”, or whenever Nakyum shows his disgust with it all, Seungho simply shuts down and rapes him, I won’t be holding my breath about it. Especially considering that we already have over 50 chapters with Seungho not going through any changes. The only things that changed from chapter 1 to now is that he fell into an all domineering obsession with Nakyum, he seems to mistake for love (or at least his idea of it). That’s it. Nothing else. I know one could bring up the argument that Seungho became softer and defended Nakyum, but this just leads back to his obsession with him and regarding him as his possession. Sorry for the long ramble.
I really can’t get a read on how this author will approach this yet. As i said before, some generic tropes are creeping up that seem to suggest an easy resolution to this toxic relationship. On the other hand, we’ve seen a build up to some kind of catharsis for both of them. What I’m sure of is that the author is aware of the social discrepancy as it’s always brought up by Seungho, Nakyum and the people around them. So I assume (hope) there is a plan for future conscious thoughts, that are brought to paper, about their toxic dynamic and power imbalance. It’s all in the open still as we don’t know how long this webtoon will be in the end. If I remember correctly, the noona was overhearing a conversation about Seungho and his painter lover at the market and came to the conclusion that it’s Nakyum? So she went there and demanded to see him? I have to reread it. But yes, she almost came out of nowhere. And honestly, I’m cringing about her bursting into Seungho’s manor, all self confident demanding to see Nakyum. After all she’s a low prostitute and from what we’ve seen there are no repercussions for noble born people killing low borns out in the open. So well, the tropes are definitely creeping up here.
I found this interesting. First off, the drawings are beautiful, second off, it's beautifully written, third of... the seme had been evirated but...they can still love each other. So many ways to pleasure each other exist, they don't have to use seme's dick. I found this story very interesting, different from other yaois. I also liked the historical setting.
