I've been reading FYL and only at ch 35 so far but reading these series out of order I find I notice more significance to dialogue and interactions between these two than I would have if I'd read FYL first. I realise that Yuri saw Teacher as maybe the only adult that he could trust and feel comfortable with. I don't know what home life was like but it's clear he would rather be hanging out with Jiri during summer break, helping him with his extra teacher work, than be at home. Jiri was young enough he didn't really lord it over his students, and he genuinely cared and was concerned for them. So when Yuri has to go to the wedding, where the love of his life is being taken away from him, and then runs into the teacher, the adult he was most comfortable with, only to discover "what the fuck happened to you?" his entire world just shattered to pieces. No wonder he's super aggro and taking it out on Jiri. It's not fair to Jiri, to be sure. Not at all. But I get why Yuri is so pissed. Everything he trusted in is falling apart and he doesn't know what to do. Even the sexual aspect of it is probably shocking to him. Even being kissed that day, is shocking to him. He didn't see Teacher that way, as that type of person. Now he thinks everything he trusted is gone and he's so fucking bitter.
As for Jiri, back then he probably took all the extra work to keep his mind off his depression and his unrequited love, tried to keep focused on something else and positive. The other faculty saw that as a cue to walk all over him. Eventually teaching became draining, when everyone walks all over you, and even your students see weakness and take advantage of it. You stop caring about things. He needs help. He needs support. Both him and Yuri just need to be loved and feel like they're special and important to somebody else. So I'm hopeful things get better as we go.
