I felt like the backstory had significance in telling us that even though He loved Jade he sees him now as his Sui. Jade was the angel that he lost and came back to him to save him again the was it did in the attic. Such a divine being could only be loved but not touched by dirty hands in Rio's eyes. in this way it explains that his love for Jade the angel was an entirely different love than his love for Sui. As a psych student i enjoyed seeing the multifaceted layers of his feelings that were effected by the time loop. As for why he needed an angel, the Sadist in me wants to see that man get a taste of his own medicine. See how he likes having a "Daddy". (╬￣皿￣)凸
