It's a trope in bl unfortunately.... But I think it has more to do with the fact that MC doesn't realize the reality of his relationship and his friend doesn't like the ML
Although it’s primarily used for men, gay is an umbrella term for homosexuality. Also Vasya could’ve been gay since none of his relationships with females ever worked, sometimes it just takes the right person.

I first read this nearly a year ago and was annoyed when we didn’t get to see what happened between johoon and jiwok after the whole climax but rereading it now I relise that we don’t need to know what happened and it was a good ending for them
