Maybe you should inverse the situation in your head, in order to find a solution. Imagine it the other way. You date someone for quite some times now, several years, and one day, while there is some trouble in your family, your mother comes to you, all embarassed and sorry, to tell you that your bf told her that he was in love with her.
Sure, you'll be angry, and sad, and a lot of thing. But isn't it better to know the truth than to stay with a bf who hit on your mother ?
I mean, if he dates your mother while being in love with you, he doesn't sound like a good man to me. It is completly inapropriate to tell you that, hence if you're 18 ! He knows that he puts you in a very, very, very bad spot ! You can't do anything about it. I don't know how is your relation with your mother, but either way, you can't just tell your mom "hi mom, I'm dating your bf now ! I'll be late tonight, bye !" And he probably is aware of that, so why did he tell you ? He's the grown up here, you shouldn't have to bear the responsability to tell your mother that her bf is a jerk !
He probably would'nt have act differently if he wanted you to tell your mother that he wanted to break with her.

Firstly I can't inverse it I've never had a boyfriend before so I wouldn't have a glue how I'd feel he is the second guy to ever say he has feelings for me and I don't want to think of him as a bad guy he has been a good friend to me I know this may sound weird but I really don't want to hurt his and my mums relationship because up till now I thought they loved each other and were a great couple my mum relies on him and I don't want to hurt her thanks for wishing me luck and telling me to be strong

Not once I heard good news about this kind of situation, esp you live together with him, it's even more dangerous. For my whole 29 years living in this world, the only good way is move on find a part time job, it's plenty out there for your age, try saving money. Last, you have to tell your mom no matter what. There is "I care about my mom bla bla bla.. Kya.." Nope.
Stand up and don't be coward, truth is hurt but it's the best thing because if you're going around and be twisted, you'll get lost in the end every party will be hurt. Tell your mom. If she still wants to be with him, ask her that you will move out because you feel uncomfortable.
