not a pro on this and avoid abo and guideverse mostly, but here's what i got:

Espers have powers that deal with these monsters, but the more they use these, there's a higher chance of them "losing control" or smth. They are ranked based on their destructive capabilities.
Guides are people that have powers to "calm" these espers and allow them to be normal again. They are ranked based on their guiding.
To guide aka to get the espers under control again, they have to be in close proximity and the closer they are, the better the effects. Of course, the higher ranked the guide, the better the effects as well. Espers and Guides should relatively be on the same rank (D, C, B, A, S, etc.).
A lot of guideverses to lean into the sexual content for "better guiding"(smh imo).

That's the general gist of it ig. I think this story has a different take on guiding (hoorayy) where they use some kinda wavelength to have some kinda effect, dont quote me on it tho.

also take note that the terms used also tends to change based from the author's universe in the "guideverse"

so the esper change to either Hunters or Sentries etc.

Guides also get other terms but rarely, so most of the time authors stick to the term guide

the origin stories also differs from author to author but that's how it usually is

just like in omegaverse there's also like substitute ways to guide or get guiding (like medical help etc)

also like in omegaverse there's also the concept of some sort of "imprinting" where if a pair imprints they imprint for life. so if the guide dies, sooner or later the esper/hunter/sentry will go berserk or rampage or explode
