i think it’s legal in some places in Japan because i saw a couple with a son in social media but i think they’re also living overseas.

I was wondering if a single man could adopt in japan? I barely know how it works here so idk how it works in japan or if surrogates are allowed?

(sorry this is a bit long! i tend to ramble...)

i looked up a little about this once, and from what i remember of the info i found then, it's already difficult just for a straight couple to adopt. japan has one of the highest ADULT adoption numbers, but is quite low regarding children due to some rather difficult and honestly shitty necessities for some children to even be adoptable, plus the preference for generational blood family is still rather prevalent there. which, unsurprisingly, tends to lead to adopted children being ignored/looked down on/lesser than/treated poorly, etc. as well - which i find rather hypocritical considering how frequent adult adoption is (even discounting the numbers for that being used for same-sex couples to 'marry'). of course, adopted children all over tend to face varying degrees of stigma, japan isn't actually special there; nonetheless, i'm certain despite all that there are places and people that/who are significantly better and accepting than others. all countries are made of diverse, complex peoples; not one is held together with a single line of thought.

if i recall correctly, same-sex adoption is almost impossible there, particularly in the form we might think of it. i believe the only real way to make that an option right now would be the child belonging legally to only one parent and the other wouldn't have any parental rights, as same-sex marriage is still, for the most part, not legally recognized. (even if it was, the other parent might need to officially adopt the child in order for it to count? not sure how step-parenting would be treated there in regards to custody). essentially the situation would still be like a single parent dating/marrying someone outside their 'family' as opposed to a married couple adopting together. however, even then, that still brings back the same issue of adopting in general, and as a single parent (especially if male) that would likely be incredibly difficult.

as far as surrogacy goes, i actually have no idea, but considering it's a type of adoption, i imagine the only way it could even potentially be viable is if the surrogate is a family member of one of the two. but honestly, no idea there. the little info i was looking at back then was specifically regarding gay couples adoption, where a few general adoption things inevitably were sprinkled in.

in the last few decades there have been lgbtq+ wins here and there in japan; even just general ones, as well. like i believe next year will officially kick start divorcing parents' ability for actual shared custody as opposed to having to make that a special, agreed upon by both parties, aside, for the non-custody given parent being allowed to see the child that isn't otherwise done in divorce cases (or just...keeping in touch regardless of law, i suppose?). the age of consent was also only raised from 13 to 16 like..last year? the year before? something like that. for a country that's always been rather xenophobic and thus a bit isolated, it's no surprise they're slower to change in some aspects compared to other places in the world. although, even saying that, there is no country on this earth that doesn't stumble a few steps back every time they take a few steps forward - not to mention there are plenty still far behind others as it is.

well, all that said, i'm not japanese, nor a lawyer, and i didn't extensively study this by any means, so i could be wrong or too generalized; and even if i'm not, there are most certainly people reading on this site who are more knowledgable regarding this topic than i am. but, regardless, i hope this little bit gives something to think on about the situation over there compared to some other places and how it would/could (not) apply to these manga that touch on 'family' and its inevitable 'loss' to a same-sex couple ^-^

this was perfect, this deserves the hype and popularity of "wmmap" and "Death Is The Only Ending For The Villainess". I think they should change the cover photo because the art in the manhwa is so stunning, I love Rupert so much one of the best MLs, I can go on about how every character is so endearing but ill stop yapping (≧∀≦)

he went to jail for like 2 months because why do they still look 21 well it was in defense to help another person so his sentence must have been short as heck

    w_iju June 18, 2025 12:35 am

Likely he got like 1 to 3 years, for hiding the body. He could have (potentially, very likely) gotten out with a defense of others justification, but hiding the body and then not notifying the police for god knows how long is still punishable by law, so...
