It can look progressive on the outside because alot of our cultures are about saving face and keeping a happy and "united" family image for our neighbors, coworkers, and friends so they don't see our "shameful family business".
South Korea also has a HUGE misogyny, women are second class citizens, problem. Their society and culture is still very much designed for men by men. A divorce may stain a man's reputation a bit but a divorce can lead to heavy bullying by coworkers and friends and family for a woman. It can destroy her career and her private life. They still very much blame a woman for being "incompetent" and that's why "her husband left her for another woman."
