Yes they actually killed them..the story is about how people who have every material thing in the world get those by exploiting all the resources and people that can be used. And weak people are exploited in this process, so black mirror shows this reality to mc and adviced them that if you want to survive you need part of you that exploits...which is shown in black mirror. Be used or use others to get what you want. But I think mc realised in the end that there are strong people (like that friend who wished him through text) who face their fear as well as do not exploit others. Still mc texted him to find a black room (selfish part of him that uses others) because he thinks there will be some day when his friend will get tired of being strong.
